How to cite CANOA
CANOA — Corpus Apertum Nummorum Orbis Antiqui — is an open scholarly catalog of ancient coinage. Citing it correctly helps readers find the exact coin type you discuss and credits the museums whose images we display. Every coin page carries machine-readable citation data: COinS (for Zotero), citation_* meta tags (for Google Scholar), and RIS / BibTeX / CSL-JSON export.
Citing a single coin type
Recommended pattern (adapted from OCRE/ANS practice):
CANOA. Coin name (catalogue no.). Corpus Apertum Nummorum Orbis Antiqui. https://canoanumis.org/coins/<slug>/ (accessed 2026-10-07).
Example:
CANOA. Denarius of Nero (RIC I (2nd ed.) Nero 1). Corpus Apertum Nummorum Orbis Antiqui. https://canoanumis.org/coins/ric-i-second-edition-nero-1/ (accessed 2026-10-07).
The catalogue number (e.g. RIC I (2nd ed.) Nero 1) is the stable scholarly identifier; the slug URL is the stable permalink.
Export formats
On every coin page use the Cite this coin panel to download a ready-made record:
- RIS — Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, JabRef.
- BibTeX — LaTeX, Overleaf.
- CSL-JSON — Citation.js, Pandoc, Zotero API.
Machine-readable metadata
Each coin page embeds: citation_title, citation_author, citation_public_url, citation_online_date, citation_technical_report_number (catalogue no.) meta tags; a COinS span for Zotero; and Schema.org JSON-LD. These let reference managers and scholarly indexes pick up the record automatically.
