Terms of Service for Schools

These terms govern a school's or district's use of CANOA Edu. Where a signed agreement — an NDPA, a district contract, or a purchase order with terms — conflicts with anything here, the signed agreement wins. Nothing in these terms reduces the protections in our Student Privacy Policy.

1. Who these terms are with

The agreement is between CANOA (the operator of canoanumis.org, "we") and the school or district that registers an LMS deployment ("you"). Teachers and students act under your authority; they are not asked to accept separate terms, and there is no student account to create. Individual teachers may use the public catalog and the free lesson plans without any agreement at all.

2. What we provide

  • Access to CANOA Edu through LTI 1.3 from your LMS, for teachers and students in your organization.
  • The assignment builder, automatic checking, teacher review screens, and the public lesson-plan library.
  • Data handling as described in the Student Privacy Policy and the Data Deletion Procedure.
  • Conformance with WCAG 2.2 AA as documented in our Accessibility Conformance Report.
  • Email support at edu@canoanumis.org, with the response times published on our contact page.

3. What you agree to

  • Register your LMS deployment with the privacy level set to anonymous, so that student names and emails are never transmitted to us.
  • Use the service for educational purposes within your organization, and not resell it.
  • Not attempt to de-anonymize identifiers, probe the service for vulnerabilities without telling us, or scrape the catalog in a way that degrades it for others — the documented public API exists precisely so you never need to.
  • Tell us promptly if you believe student data has been exposed or mishandled.

4. Content and licensing

Coin type data in the catalog is published under the Open Database License (ODbL); you may use it in teaching, including in derivative worksheets, with attribution to CANOA.

Coin images remain the property of the holding museums and are displayed on canoanumis.org with attribution under each museum's open-access policy. They are not licensed to you for redistribution: do not copy them into printed packets, learning materials, or your LMS. Our own PDFs contain catalog numbers and links rather than images for exactly this reason. Linking to a coin card is always permitted and always preferred.

Lesson plans we publish may be freely copied, adapted, and printed for classroom use. Student work belongs to the student and to your organization under your own policies; we claim no rights in it and never use it to train AI.

5. Availability and changes

We aim for the service to be available whenever your students need it, and we schedule maintenance outside North American school hours where we can. We do not offer a contractual uptime guarantee during the pilot year and we will not pretend otherwise. Material changes to features that a school depends on are announced to district contacts before they ship; material changes to privacy protections follow the 30-day notice in the privacy policy.

6. Fees

Pilots for the 2026–27 school year are free, and the public catalog and lesson plans are free permanently. Paid licensing, where it applies, is set out in your quote or purchase order; see pricing. We will not introduce a charge for something you are already using without written notice and your agreement.

7. Termination and data return

Either side may end the agreement with written notice. On termination we delete student submissions on request, or on the schedule in the Data Deletion Procedure, and confirm deletion in writing. Grades already delivered to your gradebook are yours and are unaffected. Teacher assignment templates can be exported on request before deletion.

8. Warranties and liability

We warrant that we will provide the service with reasonable skill and care, in line with the privacy and accessibility commitments published on this site. Beyond those commitments the service is provided as is.

Scholarly caveat, stated plainly: catalog records come from published reference corpora and museum data and may contain errors, disputed attributions, or gaps. That is normal in numismatics, and teaching students to check a claim against its source is part of the point. Corrections are welcome at info@canoanumis.org.

9. Governing terms for districts

US districts normally contract with us through the NDPA (SDPC Standard Version), which governs student data and carries its own choice of law; see NDPA for Districts. International schools use our GDPR Article 28 DPA. If your legal team needs a redline of these terms, write to privacy@canoanumis.org and we will respond within two business days.
